Below are free secondary literacy teaching resources for teachers in UK schools at KS3 and KS4 level to help you save time spent on lesson planning. Secondary school English teachers may find these websites useful for developing their own literacy lesson plans or for signposting their pupils to innovative online content.

Key Stage 3

The Times Spelling Bee is a UK spelling competition for 11 and 12 year olds at schools in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There is an online game on the website that runs throughout the academic year. There is also a traditional, offline version for schools, and the 2010 competition held its final at the Institute of Education in London.

With Comic Master, pupils can create their own graphic novels in a fun and innovative manner. By creating captions and speech bubbles to accompany their storyline, their literacy skills can be challenged and enhanced. The game is developed by the Reading for Life initiative.

BBC Bitesize has Key Stage 3 English Revision resources that include advice on letter writing methods and styles, spoken presentation skills and sentence structure.

The Channel 4 Way With Words section is designed specifically with literacy and language skill development in mind.

Key Stage 4

BBC Hard Spell challenges pupils' literacy skills with games against the clock to spell words correctly, identify the odd words out and more...

Bright Knowledge has an Essay Writing section with useful words and phrases for developing essays and constructing arguments. It can help pupils to develop clear and concise sentences through structured planning.

The Visuwords dictionary and thesaurus website is ideal for use with interactive whiteboards in the classroom. It is a useful tool for people of all ages, including aspiring writers and journalists, for generating new word ideas.

MP3 Podcast English Revision is a fun way for pupils to revise for their English Language and Literature GCSE exams. Podcast Revision is a database of audio lessons, many of which are free for pupils to download.
